Introduction to Photography - Sundays 2pm-4pm

A classic course for those who want to learn professional photographic techniques from the beginning. You can finally learn the correct fundamentals of photography: good composition, perspective, exposure/shutter speed/aperture/ISO, and artistry using your camera.

This fun course in the studio and outdoor will emphasize portrait shooting and improve your all of your photos.

 

 

Needed: A digital SLR camera that can be set manually such as Canon EOS, Nikon D..., Sony A... (not a cellphone). We will learn the settings. Bring a notebook and pencils.

  • Week 1: Philosophy/purpose, composition, Rule of 3rds, sketching before shooting, exposure settings (aperture/shutter speed/ISO), white balance, lens focal length, Sunny 16, trial shots
  • Week 2: Critique of your homework (displayed on studio's big screen), positioning techniques, mood, DOF, reflective lighting, B&W shots
  • Week 3: Critique, studying other photos, shooting in adverse conditions, Photoshop, planning for exhibition
  • Week 4: Exhibition, critique from other experts, and reception (visitors welcome)

 


Intermediate Photography - Lighting, Sundays 4pm-6pm

An intensive course for those who have shot with a camera but want to learn to use artificial lighting, such as strobe lights, hotlights, and umbrellas/softboxes.

 

Emphasis on lighting, portrait shooting and critique. Prerequisite: Introduction to Photography.

 

 

 

  • Week 1: Philosophy/purpose, sketching before shooting, light physics, exposure settings (aperture/shutter speed/ISO), white balance, lens focal length, where to buy strobes, radio slaves, trial shots.
  • Week 2: Critique of your homework (displayed on studio's big screen), single light source, diffusers, reflectors, DOF, B&W shots.
  • Week 3: Critique, 3-point lighting, Rembrandt/butterfly/noir/broad/short/flat/split/rim lighting, beauty dishes, Photoshop, planning for exhibition.
  • Week 4: Exhibition, critique from other experts, and reception (visitors welcome).

The Instructor
Prof. Mike Itashiki, PhD, from MusicHost Video and Photo Studio in Richardson will teach all of the classes. His photographs have been featured in textbooks, magazines, and websites. Classes will feature lectures, demonstrations, Powerpoint presentations, hands-on shooting, and critique.

 

When?
Courses (4 weekends) will start on the first Sunday of every month. Next sessions start May 7, June 4, July 2, etc. The next class will be held May 7, 14, 21 & 28 (4 weekends).

 

 

How much?
Tuition (4 weekends): $100 for Intro class; $175 for Intermediate class. 50% discount for additional immediate-family members. Children not allowed in studio. Full payment due at start of class. No refunds. Credit cards accepted.
